NEED: the longest and thinnest phone

The designer Tamer Koseli has developed, perhaps the longest and thinnest concept of a mobile phone. The name of the device is NEED. According to the designer, this phone is meant to be used only as a communication device and has no unnecessary functions such as embedded camera and multimedia player. The device has two displays: on one of its sides is posted a touch screen, through which is made all the management, on the other side - an OLED-display. The NEED’s dimensions – 140x20x5 mm. From a point of view, the long screen is convenient to display lot of information that can be viewed without having to scroll (for example, contacts list). But, will someone like the construction, or will the manufacturers be interested in such a decision – remains a question to which only the time will answer. Perhaps, NEED will join the series of concepts that will never be realized.Source: GSMpress ®

"The society is quite interested in the radiation problems from mobile phones, but continues to use these devices as before. The purpose of the advices which we have published is to suggest a wisely use of cellular phones", - has declared Sigal Sadetzki, the head-chief of the Epidemiological Institute from the Sheba Medical Center. As she said, the research lead in cooperation with 16 experts from other countries, has revealed an "obvious link" between the mobile phones use and the risk growth of getting a salivary glands cancer.
As the newspaper "Harets" writes, the Health Ministry of the country has recognized the research results of the scientists and has called the society to raise the vigilance.
MTI Micro today announced that it has achieved 2,700 hours of continuous operation with a Mobion® laboratory cell

MTI MicroFuel Cells Inc. ("MTI Micro"), the developer of Mobion® off-the-grid portable power solutions and a subsidiary of Mechanical Technology, Incorporated ("MTI") (NASDAQ: MKTY), today announced that it has achieved 2,700 hours of continuous operation with a Mobion® laboratory cell — the building block of the Company´s Mobion® chip and systems. In comparison, a typical cell phone plan in the U.S., marketed to moderate to heavy users, includes 3,000 minutes per month which, over the life of a typical 2 year contract, translates to only 1,200 hours of use.
In an industry report published by the Journal of Power Sources, tests conducted on direct methanol micro fuel cells show degradation of up to 35% after only 360 hours of operation. In addition to the 2,700 hours of continuous run-time, our Mobion® test, which is still ongoing, successfully demonstrated a significant achievement by showing power degradation of less than 15% - which we believe is a breakthrough for the micro fuel cell industry. "Our test results are a clear indication of the technical progress we have made on performance metrics including life, degradation, temperature, and humidity levels which are required to bring products to market in the consumer electronics industry. To our knowledge, there are no other published results that match ours," said Jim Prueitt, Vice President of Engineering and Operations at MTI Micro. "With these results, we believe we continue to be a leader in the micro fuel cell industry as we work toward the commercialization of our Mobion® power sources."

HTC: Windows Mobile is too complex to use for the consumer

In his interview for Connect magazine, the top-manager of HTC, Lars Weisswange (director on the regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland) has stated some curious ideas regarding the usability of the Windows Mobile operational system and its impracticality combined with the modern interfaces with touch input.
As he said, the operational system Windows Mobile is not bad for business-users, but it is difficult for ordinary users to work with this OS when it comes to touch screens. For this reason, HTC has develop the TouchFLO interface - including its 3D-version TouchFLO 3D.
Weisswange also has declared that the Internet Explorer browser for Windows Mobile is exposed to significant critics. To avoid its users’ disapproval, HTC adds in its products browsers of the other companies - for example, Opera Mobile 9.5.

Queues of several hundreds of persons were made at the Softbank’s shops in Japan too. Apple has released the new iPhone model on the Asian market for the first time, explains the agency, earlier, these smartphones were on sale only in the USA and some countries of the Europe.
Since July, 11th, the smartphone that is capable to work in the third generation networks, will start to be on sale in more than two tens of countries, and by the end of 2008 it can be bought in 70 countries of the world. It is expected, that the sales volume of the new iPhone will reach 10,5 million pieces at the end of 2008. However the Apple novelty’s critics assume that its popularity will be blended by the high tariffs for communication, the contracts without the possibility to change the operator and the activity of the "grey" market.

New York: week queue for 3G iPhone

On Friday, July 11th, in the USA will begin the sales of the second Apple iPhone generation with 3G support. People already are waiting for "the second coming": near the central Apple shop, on the Fifth Avenue in New York it is a queue of interested persons to buy the device since the last Friday. We mean, of course, it does not necessarily stand up, the people are sitting or are laid down in tents near the shop. The shop’s employees are not against this fact - for them, it is the best advertising. In fact, if for the sake of the iPhone purchase, people are ready to live a week in tent in the street – that means it really worth the costs. Though, maybe, people have simply nothing to do something else.

Motorola prepares for release a clamshell for the CDMA-networks under the name VE20. Stars from the sky the novelty will not gather neither by the way of design, nor by the way of functionality: in front of us is an ordinary "working horse ". Externally it is similar to the KRZR devices and inside - EV-DO support and two touch keys on the top panel for player management and access to on-line musical shop. Also there is Bluetooth support with A2DP, 2 MP digital camera and a voice call.

Samsung i740 — a budget smartphone without 3G, EDGE and Wi-Fi

Several days ago have appeared some information about the future budget smartphone of Samsung, which cheapness is reached by radical methods: the device does not support a third generation network, does not transfer data via EDGE and even do not have a Wi-Fi connection.
The device works under Windows Mobile 6.1 on a powerful enough (642 MHz) processor. The smartphone is equipped with a 2,8” TFT-screen with QVGA-resolution. It also has a built in 3 Mp digital camera with auto focus and flash. The only possibility, more or less fast, to transfer files is Bluetooth (A2DP). The device is equipped with a MicroSD-card slot (up to 4 ГБ).
The look of the device is quite good – the phone is executed with application of metal elements. The phone’s dimensions - 107x59x13,8 mm.

Samsung is preparing a musical phone, M3510, equipped with accelerometer

Accelerometers have reached Samsung too - according to the Czech site Mobil.cz, the Korean company prepares for release a musical phone called M3510. The look of the phone is quite interesting.
The device possesses such dimensions like 109x46x9,9 mm, QVGA-screen with 262 thousands of colors. Pictures can be made via the 2 Mp digital camera.
The accelerometer provides control of the musical tracks (just the same as shake-control from Sony Ericsson), the music can be stored on a MicroSD card, as on the phone only 20 MB of an empty space is available. The phone will appear in the end of summer at the price of approximately $330, which is not so expensive.

300 thousand of clients have reserved the 3G iPhone in Spain and Britain

The Spanish Telefonica, which works in the mobile markets of Spain and Britain under the brands Movistar and O2, has declared that almost 300 thousand of subscribers have reserved the iPhone before the beginning of the official sales.
Certainly, it does not mean that all 300 thousand will buy it, however the number is impressive, considering, that О2 has sold 8 thousand iPhones of the first generation in the first day of sales in Britain.
Just recently, the French Orange has declared that iPhone 3G will appear in France on July, 17th, the 8 Gb version will cost 149 EUR.

Willcom 9 - a simple Japanese phone with support for all Google services

The Japanese operator Willcom, has presented a new mobile phone with a modest index of 9. In the press release it is said, that this is the first phone from the manufacturer equipped with integrated support of all Google services.
But the device is interesting more likely because of its uncommon appearance, overall this clamshell reminds a small brick. According the Japanese concept, exactly in this way an extremely simple phone should look. And the technical characteristics evidently show, that Willcom 9 is really at the beginning of the phone series: QVGA-screen, 1,3 MP digital camera and 24 Mb built in memory. The novelty will be available only to Willcom’s subscribers.

Let's notice, that this information has not yet found an official confirmation. However, the use of inexpensive processors with low energy consumption (exactly like Intel Atom is) can bring to the company a significant income of 250 million dollars from 25 million of sold iPhones.

The Qwerty-keyboard Touch Pro can be slid without visible efforts and is reliably fixed in the opened and closed position. We shall remind that the exact starting date of retails and the price of the novelty are still unknown.

France Telecom did not buy TeliaSonera

France Telecom has refused the plan of absorbing the TeliaSonera holding. The official version is that the parties could not agree about mutually advantageous conditions of the transaction. France Telecom offered to shareholders $42 billion cash, however the transaction has been rejected by both private shareholders and the Swedish government, which possesses 43,5 % of the holding actions. Therefore, after the announcement that France Telecom has the intention to buy TeliaSonera, its actions price has fallen in with 21 %.
If the transaction would be made, in Europe would have appeared the largest operator of communications, serving 237 million of subscribers. Thus, the costs, by 2013, also would have decreased by 700 million euro.

It's no secret that Palm remains on the flow mainly because of the inexpensive Centro smartphones. Until today, Centro were only available to subscribers of several foreign operators, but the company decided to release the smart phones on the free market. This means, that very soon, it will be possible to buy a GSM-version of Palm Centro at a price of around $ 300. Together with the above stated, the Palm representatives have declared that in the list of standard software will be included such useful tools from Google as Maps and My Location, which allows the user to determine its location and display it on the map.
Mobile phones will be able to reproduce holograms already by 2010

The Human kind is getting closer to the standard of living, established by many science-fiction movies. As writes Silicon.com, thanks to the Indian company Infosys research, the mobile phones will be able to demonstrate 3D-images, movies, games and other content.
For example, the portable devices will be able to create a volumetric image of the accident’s place, so that the doctors can remotely support those who provide first aid. The three-dimensional image will be created with the help of a certain number of two-dimensional images. Between two devices, will be transferred a relatively compressed information on precisely these pictures, the device at the other end will create the hologram by itself.

The rumours about cancelling the Paris and BeiBei smartphones found their confirmation on this weekend - the blog.se-nse.net blog has published the information that the project is officially closed because of the specialists’ negative feedback received based on the engineering samples.
However, as the source is mentioning, the phones are likely to survive and then reincarnate on the selected Asian markets, since they are almost ready for production.
In this situation, the next official Sony Ericsson Smartphone remains the excellent XPERIA X1, announced at the Mobile Congress in Barcelona.

Some operators will delay the OS Android phone release

The need to install their own Google phone services, is delaying the release of the Android smartphone for such operators as Sprint and China Mobile, has announced today’s Wall Street Journal. It is expected that in these two cases, the phone will be delayed at least until 2009.
However, the phone with OS Android, which will be released in the U.S. under the T-Mobile logo, as expected, will appear at the end of 2008. If the Wall Street Journal is true, it can be assumed that the Google smartphone will be released at the end of the year, but not for all the operators.
The delayed release of the phones with OS Android for some operators could play as a good card for Apple. Judging from what has recently revealed Google, the functionality of the Android platform is fully capable to compete with iPhone.

The cost of the 3G iPhone components - $ 100

The Portelligent Company, which has conducted a cost analysis of the first iPhone components, believes that the cost of the iPhone 3G components do not exceed $ 100. This is what EETimes.com writes today. For comparison, the cost of the first generation iPhone components was $ 170.
According to Forward Concepts analyst, Will Strauss, the Apple Company is not only continuing to use the relatively inexpensive Infineon chip, but it also acquires the GPS-modules from a German company.
According to Portelligent, the value of the assembled sensitive display is about $ 30, 8 GB NAND-memory costs about $ 20.The new Infineon chipset with HSDPA support could be just $ 15 more expensive, and another $ 5 for the GPS-module.
In general, apart from the operators’ subsidies, Apple earns on each 3G iPhone 8 GB $ 99. However, we must bear in mind that this is the direct cost only for components - the cost of iPhone developing and marketing is not included.
Overally, Portelligent concludes: the Apple Company expects excellent financial prospects with the new iPhone.

Sony Ericsson has not presented the BeiBei and Paris smartphones

Worst fears were confirmed - the Sony Ericsson company introduced five new phones (among them a new gaming phone and photo-phone), but the BeiBei and Paris smartphones (which, apparently, have received the P10 index) were not among them.
When these handsets will be announced - is not known. However, it is noteworthy that the traditional for Sony Ericsson VIP support for these phones, including planned "leakage" of information on the Internet, give us the idea that most likely, the Japanese-Swedish company assumed that the devices would be launched sooner.
We also have to mention that, according to some rumors, the P10 release was already postponed several times.

Motorola crisis becomes even worse

Motorola dismisses 20% of the staff of one of the main company’s units - the research department. Exactly this department’s staff, at his time, designed a huge number of technological innovations, including, in fact, the mobile phone itself. 120 of the 600 engineers will be laid off and the work of another 180 will be reorganized.
On this background, there were unconfirmed rumours that the company postpones the launch of many Motorola phones. In general, since the Congress in Barcelona, no new products were presented, except the ones in "espionage" form.
The leaders of the Motorola Company have chosen the plan to separate the mobile phone unit, but some analysts have assumed that the initial difficult financial situation practically ensures a quick financial death of the new separated company.

iPhone could be harmful to iPod

The available Apple iPhone for $ 199 (two-year contract with AT&T) is the same as iPod nano with the same amount of memory (in USA). It is true that iPhone sales could seriously damage the iPod.
Arithmetic is not favorable for players - iPod touch with 8 GB memory it is sold with $ 100 more than the iPhone; iPod touch with 16 GB memory, it’s also more expensive with $ 100 than the similar iPhone 3G model.
Given that iPod sales are making 40% of the total Apple’s income, and the U.S. - the largest market of the Cupertino company - is experiencing a slowdown in consumer activity (also due to the fuel prices growth and the economic recession), the Apple products users’ behavior will be closely monitored.
While the investors are waiting: yesterday, the Apple shares finished the day with a 2.13% decline and the NASDAQ stock index fell by 0.61%. This means that the market is not confident in the Apple profits growth.

AT&T subsidizes iPhone to attract new customers

The fast downfall of the iPhone value can be explained simply: AT&T will subsidize the phone, attracting new customers. This is a standard practice for the American operator.
According to AT&T, such a scheme would allow the company a profit only in 2010. AT&T - the largest GSM-operator of the country - has signed with Apple a multiyear partnership agreement.
It worths to be mentioned that many observers had expected such a subsidy at the time of the first iPhone debut. How much it will cost in the overseas markets and what conditions of subsidy are planned – is not known so far.

Is Apple preparing a massive iPhone launch?

Just recently, the Newsweek magazine wrote that the entire distribution network of Quanta companies and Apple are working with an incredible intensity, and the boxes with mysterious contents are shipped to distributors even in Australia. All this may indicate that the new version of iPhone expects a global launch. Within a month it could be spread throughout the world.
The boxes in Australia, according to the Mactalk.com.au, are sent as secret military directives, with the indication not to open them up to June 10, 2008. It is expected that the phone's debut in Australia will happen on June 17 - at the same time when Apple store in Sydney will be opened.
As recently known, the O2 British operator representatives were told to expect a "hot" first half of July. The key speech of Steve Jobs is scheduled for June 9.

Receive MMS Including Coupons, Content and Product Reviews

Skycore, LLC, developers of Cellyspace, has today launched their Point-Of-Purchase (POP) messaging application enabling brands and retailers to increase sales by engaging in-store shoppers with coupons, product information and fun content sent to their mobile phones. This Cellyspace POP-to-MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) application enables marketers to expand the reach of traditional digital signage and POP/POS displays with informative and promotional MMS messages sent directly to the shopper's phone while on location. They can promote across all stores or at select specific retailers and regions. In a typical implementation, marketers would tag a custom Cellyspace keyword and shortcode on a product, its packaging or corresponding POP/POS display. As shoppers consider purchasing that item, they opt-in to receive the brand's message by simply texting the keyword to the shortcode."What makes this technology unique is its broad reach - up to 75% of mobile phones are now MMS enabled - and the ability for marketers to cost- effectively inform and engage prospective customers on location at that critical point of sale," said Rich Eicher, president of Skycore, LLC.Source: GSM Press

Blackberry does not allow to spy its clients

The Canadian company, Research in Motion (RIM), manufacturer of the Blackberry smartphones, rejected the request of the Indian authorities, to allow them access the data exchanged between subscribers, reported BBC News.
India fears that the criminals and terrorist can use the Blackberry services of data protection for their aims. That’s why the Indian side requested the key for decryption.
However, representatives of Research in Motion have responded that the system of corporate e-mail protection, which the Blackberry clients use, had been originally designed to exclude the access to the personal information of the third parties, including the producer-company.
According to the BBC data, today in India's BlackBerry service, which is offered by the Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone and BPL Mobile operators, are enrolled about 115 thousand people. Even so, the number is constantly growing.
