Nokia N82 Review

GSMPress

At the moment, in the Nokia series there is more than one phone of the “all-in-one” class. One of them, Nokia N82 – will be the hero of our today’s review. The size of the phone – 112x50.2x17.3 mm and the weight of 114g seem to be oversized, but for Smartphones , what Nokia N82 is, this is normal. Well, the phone’s surface is opened, the details are placed quite tightly of each other, avoiding in this way any parasitic moves and unwanted sounds. Despite its appreciable weight, the device lies in the hand with a pleasant touch and does not intend to slip and make a flight to the hostile asphalt. The aspect of the front panel is “metalized” and a slight pattern on the back cover will definitely draw the attention of fashion people.

The keyboard is comfortable, but the keys can seem to be too slim for some persons. In general, this is bound to your habits – after a short while of use, you’ll stop notice the difference. Let’s head to the slots and controls located on the sides of the phone. On the left, there is the charger socket, the microUSB port that ensures the PC connection and the microSD slot for memory card (the standard package includes a 2Gb memory card, that is an addition to the 100Mb integrated phone memory) supporting hot-swap. On the top we see an universal out-port where can be connected the stereo headset or the TV cable. There is also the On/off button that can be used for fast profile changing. On the right – a dual key for volume control, the camera key and gallery access.

The speakers are also here, they are placed by sides for a better stereo effect. The screen is quite impressive – 2.4 inches with the already standard resolution of 240x320 pixels. The display is bright; there should not be any reading problems, a possible discomfort can occur only in case of dazzling sun.

Functionality

How was already mentioned, the device is considered a universal one, with a slight accent on the photographic capacities. The link with the surroundings is ensured by the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 modules. The presence of Wi-Fi opens the door to the IP-telephony. The device is equipped with SIP-client, which will help from the start to minimize the costs of communication. It also has GPS receiver, which will not permit to lose yourself in unfamiliar places. The standard navigation program has a quite good range of features: route planning, 3D maps view, “Legend” speech and so on. However, some of the features will require payable subscription. The phone has an interesting feature – motion sensor which provides automatic switching between portrait view and landscape view when the device is laid horizontally or vertically. Those “net-maniacs” will be very pleased of the “LifeBlog”, feature that allows you to keep your online diary by sending comments and media content. In general, surfing the net with this gadget it’s a continuous pleasure, the high amount of operational memory enables the browser to “eat” even the richest graphics pages without any particular problems.

Music

The phone’s musical capacities are at a high level. The socket for the standard jack allows you to change easily the included headset for a better one. However, on the phone as well as on the headset’s remote control – there are no media player control keys. Obviously, this is done to lessen the competition for the other musical handsets from Nokia. Whatever the case, to listen music with the device is more than possible, for those not too very fanatic for music, that are listening the favorite songs from time to time, the phone can be an excellent source of music on the road.

Digital Camera

In what concerning the photo features, Nokia N82 is impressive. Two digital cameras (the second is for 3G photo calls), and the main one has an outstanding 5MP resolution and optics from the world-famous Carl Zeiss. How proudly shows Nokia, the images made with the highest settings (and their diversity makes other digital devices "to blend") are suitable for printing pictures with the size 28x36cm. The quality of the pictures is assured by the auto-focus system and the xenon flash which proves itself very suitable in dark places and rooms. By the way, thanks to the GPS module, in the file’s metadata a label is written, that links to the geographical coordinates where the picture was made. Further, this information can be processed on a computer and get a vivid photomap. Also among the talents of the smartphone is attributed recording video. While the earlier availability of this feature was rather formal, and the end result made with a phone was so artistic that “tears was rolling” while watching it, now Nokia N82 allows you to record high-quality clips indeed. Even when you watch the video on a TV (and this is very simple, all you have to do is to use the included special cable) it does not turn in to a colorful mixture of pixels, this is possible due to the 640x480 pixels high resolution and the frequency of 30 frames per second. However, one must be kept in mind, recoding video is a quite “consuming” process for the phone and while you are playing with the video, you can awake yourself with the discharged battery and full memory card.

Obviously, the Nokia N82 will be able to satisfy the demands of a wide range of users. Apparently, the device is awaiting a glorious future and the status of a mass model, especially when the price will go down relentlessly.
